It has come to my attention that there are “marijuana cafes” in Ho Chi Minh City. These aren’t Amsterdam style cafes where you can buy weed. Vietnam weed cafes just let you smoke marijuana inside. Read more about it.

Marijuana is illegal in Vietnam, as well as most other social vices. The penalties in the books are very strict, however the police seems to look the other way or will ask for a small negotiable bribe. The big problem in this country is opium and heroin so marijuana is not the police’s first priority.

Vietnam has a more lax marijuana policy than its neighbors, which you will notice when you see expats puffing on a fat joint while on the back of a Grab bike. Now, if you’re the second incarnation of Tony Montana and have kilograms of marijuana, then you might have some problems.

How to Buy Weed in Ho Chi Minh City

The easiest spot to buy marijuana is on the backpacker street, Bui Vien Street. You should see some ladies on Bui Vien Street and De Tham Street walking around selling cigarettes from a little thing around their neck. These ladies will always have marijuana, rolling papers, and filters. They basically have a weed/tobacco shop on their neck.

You just have to ask them.

The Vietnamese word for marijuana is can sa (khan-sah). You don’t need to know that though. These ladies know like 5 words of English and marijuana is one of those words. (Don’t buy cocaine either. It’s actually heroin and you die when you snort it.)

In Saigon it is very easy to buy Marijuana, but be careful because it is also very easy to get ripped off. For small quantities of very low quality goods many of the cyclo (rickshaw) drivers and motorcycle taxi drivers can help you out. Be careful as many of these guys are depraved heroin and opium addicts and have been known to mug foreigners looking for girls or ganja. Always check the merchandise first: they will rip you off, but don’t let them rip you off too much. Remember bargaining is normal. Note that heroine is also sold and used in this area, so be careful, there are needles on the ground and the disastrous actions of addicts .
